Design & Layout...

Assembling the necessary elements of communication: text and images, headlines and fine print, tables and graphs, borders and bar-codes, into the defined space is more than just playing Tetris. Page design needs to be aesthetically pleasing, conveying the mood and purpose of the topic. Yet it needs to be functional too, guiding the reader through the content in an approachable and logical flow that conveys real information. Below, see a variety of my magazine page layouts; click for a larger view.

Technical Illustration...

I believe that technical illustrations have a two-fold mission. On the one hand, they function best when they can stand alone, conveying both the overall concept and specific details of a system, mechanism, or esoteric concept through clean imagery, logical flow, and succinct labeling. However, their purpose is often to support a larger work too, reflecting the concepts and clarifying the details presented in the greater piece. In that case, they need to cross-reference and unify the content of body text, photos, graphs, and tables often becoming the cornerstone of information delivery.
My extensive work within the renewable energy industry, combined with my unique left-brain creativity and right-brain logic, makes technical illustration a source of satisfaction and matter of pride within my design skill set. Yes, I’m a rare combination of artist and geek. See technical illustrations covering a variety of topics below; click for larger view.

Multi-Frame Graphics...

Sometimes a static image doesn’t ideally convey the message. You need movement or interactivity. Whether user-activated, presenter-controlled, or auto-play: slide shows and animated GIFs that show multiple states or changing timelines can add both comprehension and wow-factor to complex graphics.

Logo & Identity...

Who are you? Whether representing a commerial endeavor, non-profit organization, or just your own definition of “self”, a logo and business card is a great first-step for creating visual recognition for who you are and what you do.

Web Design...

In the 21st century, “graphic design” is often considered synonymous with “web design.” But my long-term position as art director for a print magazine actually postponed my growth as a web designer. Now however, my web design skill set is developing rapidly. I work in the WordPress environment using a page-builder called Elementor Pro. Because of my traditional design expertise, the visual composition and user interface can surpass what the typical code geek, or Wix newbie, will come up with. Feel encouraged to sample a few of the sites I’ve built by clicking on the links at right.

Advertising & Promotion...

Got a gig coming up, a workshop or class, a trade show or conference, or just a good party? Promotional design is more than just tacking flyers to phone poles. Let me design a piece to integrate with all your mediums of communication for maximum exposure. Continuity of visual recognition will capture their inspiration. Products & Packaging...

Not everything graphical displays on a flat surface, paper or screen. Much of our perceived value comes in the form of tangible objects, and physical products. The ability to think, and design, in 3 dimensions is paramount to any product’s success as it competes for space and attention in our busy consumer world. Aesthetics are as important as ever, and functionality even more-so…products have a user interface. Good package design invites and facilitates that user.

Book Design...

Does 20+ years in magazine design make me a book designer? Well, yes and no. Yes, a magazine is a tangible piece with some design-consistency running throughout. But books are more unified, and precious. Their purpose is to convey information and to preserve that information indefinitely. They are not a consumable, but a durable good. They deserve solidity in design.
My experience designing books started way back in college with a Program Chair who had her art books in the Smithsonian’s collection; I was inspired. While several of my designs were short-run custom projects, or even one-off art pieces, I’ve also done larger-run works that hit the store shelves. From how-to, to poetry, to childrens’ books, to personal astrology tomes hand-bound in leather, my book design abilities are diverse. And yes, cranking out thousands of magazine layouts over the years, helped exercise the creative process too.

Other Services...

What else can I do? I have additional skill sets relating to graphics and publishing that may be of use to you: Think photography and image correction, copy writing, etc.  But even when these skills are not my forte to the level of quality that your project deserves, I can also tap into a network of other professionals to fulfill your needs. I will never oversell myself or my abilities. See my “other Service” page for more info on skill I can offer, or outsource.
